Session Description

January 22 2026 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

January 2026 E-Learning Event, hosted by Community-Based Research Canada

Community-Based Research Canada presents “Centering Lived Experience of Incarceration in Research: Developing and Implementing a Prison Health Research Council”.

People with lived experience of incarceration are often included in research as participants, but not often as research leaders and collaborators. The Prison Health Research Council based out of McMaster University aims to change that. This council of 11 individuals with lived experience of incarceration is contributing to Canadian prison health research, developing new research ideas, and using their work to advocate for the health of people in prison.

In this session, two Council members and one academic research partner will discuss the development of the Council, current Council activities, why having this Council matters, and what will come next for the Council.

Presenters:

  • Jessica Gaber, Project/Research Coordinator, Department of Family Medicine, McMaster University
  • Latasha Wilson, Member, Prison Health Research Council
  • Fallon Aubée, Member, Prison Health Research Council
