Drawing across the Disciplines: Fieldwork Webinar – Nov. 4, 2026

Session Description

The Centre for Research & Innovation Support (CRIS) presents the next session in the Drawing Across the Disciplines series. In this session, we explore Fieldwork. A defining feature of many different disciplines, fieldwork can, and does, mean a variety of things for researchers. We will explore how scholars define fieldwork from where it happens, to how it is orchestrated, and to what skills are needed to do fieldwork in particular sub-disciplines. Scholars at UofT conduct fieldwork in the GTA, in Canada, and around the world. Each site offers new opportunities and challenges that will be featured in the multi-disciplinary panel. 

The webinar panelists will share their experiences with fieldwork and will offer their working definitions of their practices when in the field. Similarities and differences will be highlighted in the discussion in order to demonstrate what other fields’ fieldwork have to offer. 

As with past the Drawing Across the Discipline sessions, this webinar will be followed by a hands-on, limited enrolment workshop. The workshop will focus on examining good practices when preparing and doing fieldwork. Case studies will illuminate how different disciplines think with fieldwork and offer insights into university resources for compliance and safety when carrying out fieldwork. Particular attention will be paid to ensuring considerations of safety, equity, and inclusive fieldwork practices. 

Participants will leave the workshop with written guidance for their lab/team/group when pursuing fieldwork. The guidance can be used as part of a lab book or on a research website.
