Identifiers for your journal: ISSNs and DOIs

Session Description

October 28, 2020 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm EDT

This practical workshop is meant for journal editors and editorial teams across all campuses. Both library hosted and other University of Toronto-affiliated student and faculty journals are welcome to join.

In this workshop we will discuss:

International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) for journals

  • What is an ISSN?
  • Why should your journal obtain an ISSN?
  • How to find a previously acquired ISSN
  • How to obtain an ISSN
  • Where to display your ISSN

Digital Object Identifier (DOI) for articles

  • What it a DOI?
  • What are the benefits of using DOIs?
  • How to take advantage of the free DOI service for UTL-hosted journals
  • How to assign DOIs in OJS (demo)

The demos will be based on the Open Journal Systems (OJS) offered by the UTL Journal Production Services, but all other information will be platform-agnostic and applicable to most journals.

Please contact Mariya Maistrovskaya, Digital Publishing Librarian at mariya.maistrovskaya@utoronto.ca if you have any questions about this workshop.
