Community-Based Research Canada presents “Centering Community in Community-Based Research”. In this Community Conversations series, we highlight research that exemplifies a pivotal feature of community-based research: centering community and lived experience perspectives in all aspects of the research. This series will showcase projects that have been led by community members with lived experiences of the issues being investigated, and projects that have amplified the voices and experiences of those with lived experience throughout the research process.

Cultivating Collective Wisdom: Facilitation Resources for Community Engagement – The Pedagogies of Community Engagement Practice Research Project (PECEP)

The Pedagogies of Community Engagement Practice is a 3-year community-based research project created to explore, generate, and share knowledge about facilitation practices that support community-engaged work across different sectors. Our project was inspired by a deep desire to collectively explore and share knowledge about facilitation practices that support community-engaged work to advance social justice.

Our unique partnership brought together community-based non-profit organizations, academic researchers, and independent community-engaged facilitators working in fields such as community arts, HIV and harm reduction, adult education, Indigenous Sovereignty, youth engagement and activism, anti-racist social movements, community-based research and more. Organizational partners included the Centre for Community Based Research, Righting Relations Canada, Toronto Arts Foundation’s Neighbourhood Arts Network, Women & HIV/AIDS Initiative, and the Community Engaged Research Institute at Simon Fraser University.

During this webinar, members of the Pedagogies of Community Engagement Collective will share their collective approach to research design, information gathering, analysis and knowledge sharing.  Together, we collaboratively produced a series of evidence-informed resources such as a facilitator’s guide, podcast, collages, videos, and a website ‘for practitioners by practitioners’. Presenters will highlight findings and showcase key resources that other community-engaged practitioners (such as those in the wider CBRCanada network) can use to reflect on their own facilitation practice.
