Research Data Management (RDM) Initiative
Research Data Management practices help to ensure the quality, reliability, and integrity of research data that can enhance the credibility and impact of research findings.
What is Research Data Management?
Research Data Management (RDM) refers to the processes and actions throughout a project which guide the collection, documentation, storage, sharing, and preservation of research data. RDM is an element of Digital Research Infrastructure (DRI) that guides data collection best practices that allows researchers to find and access data and enhance the credibility and impact of research findings.
Implementing good RDM practice is a shared responsibility. The University of Toronto has developed an Institutional Research Data Management Strategy (The Strategy). The Strategy will foster a culture of responsible data management practices. As RDM practices evolve, the institution will work to improve data management infrastructure, supports, and services.
University of Toronto Institutional Research Data Management Strategy
The University of Toronto Institutional Research Data Management Strategy outlines the institutional commitment to responsible practices for the management of data created, collected, and utilized throughout the research process at, or under, the auspices of the University of Toronto. The Strategy guides the direction for expected support services and resources available at the university. The first version of The Strategy was co-developed through extensive consultation with the University of Toronto research community and oversight from the DRI@UT Advisory and Researcher Council.
It is the Tri-Agencies’ belief that research data collected through the use of public funds should be responsibly and securely managed and be available for reuse by others where ethical, legal and commercial obligations permit. The U of T Institutional Research Data Management Strategy outlines the importance, expectations, institutional goals and priorities for research data management practices.
The Tri-Agency Research Data Management Policy also outlines requirements for applicants to include a data management plan (DMP) with their application for certain funding opportunities.
