In Conversation: Articulating Impact in Honours & Awards Nominations

Session Description

June 9, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am

The Centre for Research & Innovation Support (CRIS) is hosting a 90-minute webinar reflecting on the concept and articulation of impact in research honours and awards nominations.

Recognition of research excellence and impact is important to faculty career development. Yet, as many honours and awards increasingly seek to recognize multidimensional impacts in and beyond one’s immediate research field, those who can clearly identify and articulate these impacts have an advantage in earning recognition.

This session will begin with a conversation reflecting on questions such as:

  • How and why have honours and awards competitions increasingly prioritized impact in recent years, and what are the implications?

  • How do the goals of recognition opportunities influence who is recognized?
  • How can researchers position themselves as ideal candidates in an impact-focused environment?

The session will then move to concrete examples of different types of impacts that can be drawn out of candidates’ CVs and will review structural and stylistic writing tools to present impact most effectively.

Featured Presenters:

  • Barbara Fallon, Associate Vice-President, Research

  • Sarah Carson, Manager, University Awards and Honours, Office of the Vice-President, Research and Innovation; Co-Chair, CORE Working Group on Honours and Awards

  • Madeleine Taylor, Strategic Research Development Officer, Ontario Institute for Studies in Education; Co-Chair, CORE Working Group on Honours and Awards

  • Gwen Burrows, Assistant Vice-President, International Engagement and Impact
