Navigating GenAI: An Introduction for Researchers – Sept. 19, 2024

Session Description

The Centre for Research & Innovation Support (CRIS) is hosting learning opportunities for University of Toronto researchers, staff and students curious about how Generative AI (GenAI) tools could be used for a range of research activities. These opportunities will support our scholarly research community to become critical users of these new tools.  As we explore themes over the course of our discussions we will emphasize GenAI as a supportive tool not a replacement for expertise and critical thinking.

Our first Fall session will feature Prof. Susan McCahan, recently appointed Provostial Advisor on Artificial Intelligence. Prof. McCahan will review key AI concepts (e.g., machine learning, large language models) and provide an overview of potential applications specifically of GenAI to support scholarly work. The session will also  address important considerations when working with GenAI tools (e.g., copyright, intellectual property, authorship, citation, allowable uses) and potential challenges important in the context of research (e.g., limitations of training data, EDI issues).
