This session comprises demonstrations of a selection of AI tools for Qualitative Data Analysis, and discussion about their potential for research and evaluation. Using sample data, we consider a series of analytic tasks and methodological implications of use in different contexts, with different types of data and at different stages in the analytic process.  

  • Generative-AI capabilities and their application to Qualitative Research 
    • Automated Transcription 
    • AI Summaries 
    • AI coding and code suggestions  
    • Conversing with qualitative texts and coded data 
  • Demonstrations of three tools chosen to illustrate variety in capabilities 
    • MAXQDA – example of Gen-AI integrations into established suite of analysis tools 
    • Reveal – example of Gen-AI App for Qualitative Analysis – participant-based data 
    • AILYZE – example of Gen-AI App for Qualitative Analysis – variety of Qualitative Data 
  • Keeping the human in the loop using AI tools for Qualitative Research 
    • Integrating the use of GenAI features in the analysis process 
    • Pros and Cons of using general-purpose vs. bespoke AI tools for Qualitative Analysis 
    • Next steps in planning for the use of AI tools
