Fundamentals of Data Visualization

Session Description

January 8, 2020 @ 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm EST

This session occurs at the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus and is part of the Digital Scholarship @UTSC Series.

Data Visualization has become increasingly important for research, providing new channels for data analysis and communication about data. This workshop provides a foundational perspective for data visualization by providing participants with an overview of five types of visual analysis: profiling, geospatial, temporal, topical and network analysis. In this two-hour workshop, participants enrolled in this course will achieve basic familiarity with each analysis type and their suitability for research questions through in-class discussion of visualization examples. As visualization examples are discussed, the instructors build towards an understanding of the types of visualizations used in micro, meso, and macro analysis and invite discussion on the implications of authors’ choices vis a vis pre-attentive visual properties. Participants will then explore a sample data set using Google Data Studio.

To receive GPS accreditation, participants can complete a short-answer questionnaire with a link to their visualization.
