Getting Started with Generative AI for Research: Microsoft Copilot Hands-on Workshop – June 24, 2024

The Centre for Research & Innovation Support, in collaboration with the Centre for Teaching Support & Innovation and the Academic, Research & Collaborative Technologies group, is hosting an in-person and interactive workshop on generative AI (GenAI) on Monday, June 24, from 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm. Presenters will explain how GenAI works and guide attendees through hands-on activities with Microsoft Copilot, a U of T approved GenAI tool.
The session will:
- Introduce participants to GenAI and how it can be used for research
- Introduce participants to the promise and pitfalls of GenAI applications
- Provide hands-on exercises with Microsoft Copilot to experiment with prompting strategies
- Invite participants to consider how GenAI can be used in responsible and productive ways for research
Learning Objectives
At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Describe the fundamental principles of GenAI and examples of how it can be used for research
- Describe the opportunities and risks of GenAI with respect to equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility
- Describe how Microsoft Copilot can be used for research
- Apply prompt-writing strategies when using Microsoft Copilot

- This is a limited enrollment workshop. Preference will be given to faculty researchers and research support staff
- No prior experience is needed to fully participate
- Participants are required to bring a laptop with Microsoft Edge installed
