Supporting Students to Completion and Beyond Dec 9

Session Description

December 9, 2020 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm EST

This webinar series is intended for faculty who are supervising graduate students and who are interested in enhancing their supervisory practices. Each webinar in the series offers a contained topic so participants are welcome to join for one or all three webinars! For a complete description of this lunchtime webinar series, visit Best Practices in Graduate Supervision: Setting Your Students Up for Success.

Although encouraging a student’s completion of program requirements is at the heart of the supervisory work, a successful supervisor-student relationship can extend beyond the monitoring of academic progress, often involving a range of strategies to respond to the diverse range of student needs. Moreover, despite the best intentions and preparations, the path from start to finish of a successful graduate supervisory relationship can include challenges. As a supervisor, you have many opportunities to create an equitable and inclusive learning environment, to support your students in their professional and career development, and to direct them to appropriate institutional services when needed. Join us for an exploration of strategies to help you support your students, navigate conflict in the supervisory relationship, and support student success within and beyond achieving academic milestones.

Topics to be addressed include:

  • creating equality and equity when working with students
  • being aware of and encouraging students to make use of resources and services
  • when challenges arise: strategies for conflict resolution
  • supporting students beyond academe
