Have you wondered about what supervisory approach you might take to assist you in creating a rewarding graduate experience for both your students and yourself? Supervision can take many forms, depending on the program the student is enrolled in, the nature of the research or scholarly project, the student’s personal needs and their learning style, the standards of the discipline, and more. A key ingredient in the graduate experience is the supervisory style that you develop and use to mentor your students from the beginning of their work through successful completion of their degree. Join us for an exploration of your supervisory style and discussion of strategies for balancing the roles of mentor and supervisor to help students navigate their graduate work.

Topics to be addressed include:

  • reflecting on the nature of graduate supervision in your discipline
  • defining and enhancing your supervisory style through the Supervisor Model Matrix
  • exploring key characteristics that students of all disciplines value in a supervisor
  • building an effective graduate-student supervisor relationship
