Diversity, Equity and Inclusiveness in Critical Care: From Research Participants to Research Teams
Presented by Dr. Sangeeta Mehta, MD, FRCPC
Moderated by Dr. Andrew Baker, MD, FRCPC
About this talk: Inclusiveness and broad representation in research teams and research subjects are essential to generate impactful research which is generalizable and broadens our understanding of health disparities and determinants of health. Dr. Mehta will discuss the under-representation of women and other marginalized groups in clinical trials and in diverse scholarly activities within critical care medicine.
About the speaker: Dr. Sangeeta Mehta is a Critical Care Physician and Clinician Scientist at Sinai Health System in Toronto. One of Dr. Mehta’s major research foci is Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) in academic medicine, particularly relating to gender. She is the EDI Chair of the Canadian Critical Care Trials Group. She leads a program of research in EDI and has published extensively in this area. Many of her EDI scholarly activities and publications represent collaborations with national and international colleagues. She has contributed to Round Tables and the development of multiple equity policies and is invited to speak nationally and internationally on this topic.
About the moderator: Dr. Andrew Baker is the Scientific Director, Critical Care at Unity Health Toronto. He has been the Chief of the Departments of Critical Care and Anesthesia, and the Medical Director of the Surgery and Critical Care Program at St. Michael’s Hospital. He is the inaugural Cara Phelan Chair of Critical Care Medicine and a Professor at the University of Toronto. Dr. Baker directs a brain injury laboratory in the Keenan Research Centre and is involved in biomarker studies in brain injury and critical illness.
