Indigenous Book Club – Book Selection

Session Description

October 23, 2019 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Explore works by Indigenous peoples of Canada at the 2nd Annual Indigenous Book Club in the U of T Scarborough Library (UTSC Library) Makerspace, Wednesday, Oct. 23 from 12-2 pm.

Join us for part one of the Indigenous Book Club where we will learn about various books & podcasts by Indigenous peoples of Canada. The event will conclude with a sharing circle where participants will select 3 items that participants will read or listen to by Tuesday, Nov. 12

The book club is a way to help students, staff, faculty and the local community gain a better understanding of Canada’s true history from an Indigenous lens. Learning outcomes include:

  • Learning about Indigenous themes and engage in conversation on different Indigenous perspectives that help with addressing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada report and is part of the University mandate to work towards reconciliation.

  • Exploring Indigenous themes to create new opportunities for learning and dialogue related to reconciliation across the three campuses amongst faculty, staff, and students.

  • Building strong foundations and create strong interpersonal skills on campus with faculty, staff, and students that give Indigenous and non-Indigenous students a sense of connection and pride in their affiliation with UTSC.

The Indigenous Book club is a tri-campus initiative started at the UTSC Department of Student Life in collaboration with the UTSC Library, U of T Libraries and First Nations House.
