Intro to OBS Studio

Session Description

June 15, 2021 @ 9:30 am - 11:30 am EDT

This session will occur online and is facilitated by the University of Toronto Scarborough Library. It is part of the library’s Digital Tools Series: 4 workshops( Podcasting with Audacity, Intro to OBS, Advanced OBS, and Intro to ArcGIS Online)

This workshop will use Open Broadcast Software Studio (OBS Studio), as a method of delivering educational material through Zoom, Teams, and BB Collaborate, using Virtual Cameras. This virtual learning delivery method was developed based on the use of broadcast software used by news agencies, which is the most common direct/live informative format used to educate the public.

OBS Studio gained most of its notoriety with the rise of the video game streaming platform Twitch. It is currently used by these video game streamers to synchronously display their videogame play, a camera of themselves playing, and generate graphic overlays, while conversing with viewers through chat functions. Based on their ability to do all of these actions synchronously, I wondered if it could also be used for synchronous and asynchronous online instruction. This training provides the basics for using OBS Studio.

Please, install OBS Studio prior to the workshop.

Facilitators:

  • David Kwasny, Digital Projects & Technologies Librarian, University of Toronto Scarborough Library
  • Chad Crichton, Liaision Librarian, University of Toronto Scarborough Library
