Research At Work 1: Science for Policy: Evidence to Drive Decision Making

Research at Work 1: Science for Policy will cover how science can impact government decision-making and inform policy. We will discuss the various pathways between science and policy, and we will examine the steps involved in communicating science to policymakers. Workshop attendees will learn from expert speaker Dr. Jeff Kinder, who will share his experience and unique lens on the process of bridging science with policy. Finally, using a case study, attendees will have a chance to engage in the process of translating science to policy.

Speaker – Dr. Jeff Kinder
Dr. Jeff Kinder has 30 years’ experience in government STI policy. His US experience includes the National Science Foundation, National Academies and Naval Research Lab.

In Canada, Jeff has worked at Industry Canada, Natural Resources Canada and the Council of S&T Advisors. From 2015-2017, he led the Federal S&T Secretariat supporting the Minister of Science and DM Champion for Science. From 2017-22, he led the science and innovation practice at the Institute on Governance. At uOttawa, Jeff is the inaugural Executive-in-Residence at the Institute for Science, Society and Policy and adjunct at the Telfer School of Management. He is a project director at the Council of Canadian Academies directing assessments on international partnerships and quantum technologies.

Jeff is a member of the Canadian Science Policy Centre board and the HIBAR Research Alliance governing council. A recovering physicist, he holds a PhD in public policy and a Master’s in science, technology and public policy.
