Research Connect: Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS)

Session Description

March 8, 2023 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm EST

Research Connect is delighted to dedicate a webinar to one of the most extraordinary research areas of our time “Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS)”. Professor Paul Fitzgerald, a global expert on rTMS from Australia, will be joining us as a special guest speaker. We are also thrilled to have Dr. Daphne Voineskos as an expert to help moderate the session. Please see below short bios for Dr. Fitzgerald and Dr. Voineskos.

Please join us in learning and expanding our knowledge on “Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS): From Clinical Trials to Clinical Practice”.

Paul Fitzgerald is the Head of the School of Medicine and Psychology at the Australian National University. He is an academic psychiatrist with a MBBS degree, Masters of Psychological Medicine and research PhD from Monash University. He has conducted an extensive range of experimental studies and clinical trials, focused on the development of novel treatments options for patients with depression, schizophrenia, obsessive compulsive disorder, PTSD, autism and Alzheimer’s disease with a special interest in repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS). He has had continual NHMRC grant support for 20 years and over $10 million in research support in the last 5 years. He has published several books, 500 journal articles and been cited over 20,000 times. He has established multiple clinical rTMS services, founded several device and clinical service companies and led a national application to MSAC in the Federal Department of Health which resulted, in 2021, in Medicare funding ($280 million in year 1) for rTMS therapy for patients with depression.

Dr. Voineskos is a Clinician Scientist at the Temerty Centre for Therapeutic Brain Intervention at CAMH and the Medical Lead of the rTMS Clinic in the Poul Hansen Family Centre for Depression at UHN. She is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto. She completed medical training at the University of Nottingham, England, followed by specialty training in psychiatry at the University of Toronto. As Dr. Voineskos has a long-standing dedication to research, she pursued a PhD through the Institute of Medical Science and Clinician Investigator program at the University of Toronto. Following psychiatric residency training, and during her PhD, she undertook a research training fellowship at the Temerty Centre for Therapeutic Brain Intervention. Dr. Voineskos’ scientific impact is advancing and personalizing investigational and therapeutic brain stimulation techniques in treatment refractory psychiatric disorders. Dr. Voineskos is principal investigator or co-investigator on multiple federally and philanthropically funded studies to optimize and personalize brain stimulation delivery, and is a committed mentor and supervisor to graduate students and medical trainees. Dr. Voineskos’ research program is focused on the neurobiological mechanisms and abnormalities in depression, with the translational goal of integrating these scientific findings into clinical care.
