Session Description

October 20, 2022 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm EDT

Have you ever wondered where all your time goes when looking at your phone? This workshop is focused on habits and how they are formed. We will start by looking at how habits are formed and then explore the ways our phones have been designed to grab our attention. We will end by looking at ways to establish boundaries through positive habits, and outsmart your smartphone.

Participants will leave with:

  • An understanding of how habits are formed
  • An understanding of the design tricks technologies use to keep us hooked
  • Apply practical steps to keep your smartphone in check

Date and time: Thursday, October 20, 12 – 1:30 pm ET
Location: Online via Zoom (registrants will receive a link via email)
Instructors: Leanne Trimble, Data & Statistics Librarian, leanne.trimble@utoronto.ca; Julia Martyniuk, Liaison and Education Librarian, julia.martyniuk@utoronto.ca, Gerstein Science Information Centre

This workshop is part of the U of T Libraries Data Detox Week, happening Oct 19-21, 2022. It uses material created for the Data Detox Kit by Tactical Tech, an international NGO that engages with citizens and civil-society organizations to explore and mitigate the impacts of technology on society.
