Global Excellence Initiative: How to Use Social Media to Effectively Share Complex Information (Jun 23, 2021)

Session Description

June 23, 2021 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm EDT

Do you find social media intimidating? Do you think Twitter is not an impactful medium to share knowledge? Have you ever wondered what platform is most effective to communicate the results of your research?

You’re not alone, and we’re here to help.

The Global Excellence Initiative is organizing a series of workshops to support Canada’s researchers in their efforts to share knowledge, research and science. The second in our series will provide insight on how to use social media to promote your work and research results in a way that is engaging while remaining accurate and impactful.

Kevin Parent, social media lead at Ottawa Public Health and his team have been lauded across the country (Maclean’sCBC) for their innovative, often irreverent – but always informative – approach to disseminating public health data, messaging and advice via Twitter throughout the pandemic. In this one-hour workshop, Parent will share the importance and value of using social media to convey important, sometimes complex, information to a general audience.

Topics covered will include:

  • How to share data or information without “dumbing it down.”
  • Why you should disseminate your research results on social media.
  • How to make your research interesting for a broad audience.
  • What you can do to counter misinformation online.
