Using MAXQDA & AI for Qualitative Data Analysis

Session Description

October 21 2026 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

  • What: Building upon the Introduction to Using MAXQDA for Qualitative Data Analysis workshop, learn about using AI in qualitative research and some of MAXQDA’s AI tools.
  • Why: Exploring emerging AI usage in qualitative research—including where AI can positively assist in qualitative research, along with considerations of ethical issues and risks—will help inform your decisions on the intelligent and critical application of AI in future qualitative research.
  • Software: Faculty, staff, and students at the University of Toronto can now get a free license key for MAXQDA. Check out our installation guide for instructions. You can also use it in the Robarts Library 4th floor computer lab and the Map & Data Library (MDL) data lab on the 5th floor.
  • Who: This workshop is designed for those new to MAXQDA’s AI tools and more generally about the topic of AI in qualitative research. There is an assumption of some basic knowledge of using MAXQDA, such as working with codes. This prior knowledge can be obtained by first taking the Introduction to Using MAXQDA for Qualitative Data Analysis workshop. Skills gained in this workshop can help participants working with qualitative data from any discipline: Humanities, Social Sciences, or Sciences. There are no prerequisites or assumptions of knowledge of statistics or programming.
  • When: Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2026, 10am-12pm
  • Where: Online via Zoom link (provided upon registration)
  • How: This is a 2-hour online workshop, consisting of a lecture and then a series of demonstrations, which you can follow along with or just watch, interspersed with self-paced activities. There will be a short break in the middle.
  • Code of Conduct: Map & Data Library (MDL) workshops are a welcoming and inclusive environment for learning. To learn more, check out our Code of Conduct.
  • Accessibility: The MDL is committed to making our workshops accessible to everyone. If you require an accommodation to fully participate in the workshop, please contact Kelly Schultz (kelly.schultz@utoronto.ca) to discuss options.
  • Complementary Learning Materials: Check out our Getting Started Guide for more resources.

Join your peers to meet new people and learn new skills in a welcoming and encouraging environment!
