Time for reflection helps participants to learn from experience. This activity uses playing cards as a debriefing tool. Give each person one or more cards, and then ask them to reflect on, or make remarks about, the suit they were dealt.

  • HEART: share an emotion experienced during the session.
  • SPADE: talk about any new points that were dug up within the session.
  • DIAMOND: describe something valuable that emerged from the session.
  • CLUB: think of a potential future development that could grow from this session.

Download the Playing Card Debrief Template attached in the tool panel and apply it to your facilitated session.

Tips

As an optional strategy use only cards with lower numbers in your “deck” (i.e., Ace, 2, 3, 4, 5). Deal the cards, then encourage participants to form pairs and offer as many observations or remarks as their card number recommends.
