Trick or Treaty? – Presented by the Indigenous Film Collective x Innis College – Nov. 4, 2025
Session Description
November 4, 2025 @ 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Treaty Week (sometimes called Treaty Recognition Week) is observed in several provinces, including Ontario, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and others, usually in the first week of November. It was established to encourage learning about the treaties signed between First Nations and the Crown (representing settlers/Canada) and to reflect on how those agreements continue to shape relationships today.
In partnership with First Nations House and Indigenous Education Week, we invite you to a screening of Trick or Treaty? (2014), directed by acclaimed filmmaker Alanis Obomsawin. This powerful film examines the history and ongoing significance of Treaty No. 9, highlighting First Nations communities’ efforts to uphold their treaty rights.
Through compelling storytelling, Trick or Treaty? asks us to reflect on reconciliation, sovereignty, and our shared responsibility to honour and uphold treaty relationships today.
