Creating Inclusive & Equitable Spaces for Collaboration: Facilitation & EDI Best Practices – Mar. 9, 2022

Feature Guest: Dr. Nicole Kaniki, inaugural Director of EDI in Research and Innovation

How we facilitate our everyday team meetings to larger community conversations has a significant role to play in creating more equitable and inclusive spaces for collaboration and engagement. Effective facilitation also considers the power dynamics of the relationships in the room that can inadvertently exclude members from underrepresented groups when dominant groups are not culturally sensitive to their own biases and how these are expressed in their behaviors within the context of collaboration. As a facilitator, having the skills to be able to recognize, respond to, and redress inequities that occur in meetings and conversations can lead to greater team cohesion and more inclusive and innovative environments. We will learn how to “call members in” and ensure that diversity of thought and contribution to meetings and conversations are valued and empowered.   

In this workshop, CRIS will be joined by guest facilitator Dr. Nicole Kaniki, the inaugural Director of EDI in Research and Innovation, to explore best EDI practices within facilitation processes. In this hands-on workshop, participants will have an opportunity to apply new learnings to case study examples and be provided with tools and best practices for equitable and inclusive facilitation.
