This is the second session in our Book Publishing Series.
This session will bring together editors from a university press, an academic trade press, as well as a scholarly publishing expert who will share their insider knowledge on navigating academic publishing from the publisher’s perspective.
The panelists will share tips for authors on submitting a successful book proposal, the best way to approach an editor, what questions you should ask and be prepared to answer, and more.
While this event is focused on academic publishing in the humanities and social sciences, anyone interested in academic publishing can learn from the collective wisdom presented in this panel.
Session Objectives:
- To see ‘behind the curtain’ and shed light on the publication process. Understanding the book publishing process and timelines – from drafting a manuscript through to publication
- To gain practical advice and strategies towards successful book proposals and contract negotiation leading to the publication of a book.
- To get a better understanding of academic trade presses and university presses, and which is a better fit for their book

Primary audience are researchers, from all levels of experience, in the Social Sciences and Humanities working on a single authored manuscript. Affiliated researchers, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and anyone interested in academic publishing are also welcome to attend.

- Understand what publishers are looking for in a book proposal and how to find the right fit with a publisher
- Apply advice and strategies towards drafting a book proposal and negotiating a book contract
