Make substantial, meaningful progress on your scholarly journal writing projects this Winter term. Join the Faculty Writing Accelerator: Journal Articles (Winter 2027) for a facilitated series of sessions featuring structured writing activities, short ‘Spark Talks’ by expert guest speakers who will share experiences with scholarly writing, editing, and help uncover the hidden curriculum of scholarly publishing, and dedicated co-writing for group accountability.  

The weekly session topics are guided by relevant scholarship on scholarly writing (including selections from: Academic Writing as if Readers Matter, Write No Matter What, and Writing Your Journal Article in Twelve Weeks 2nd edition). The weekly sessions are focused on working together as a cohort and emphasize attainable, practical, goal setting for writing and publishing scholarly, peer-reviewed articles. Skills, tools, and resources shared in the program will propel participants’ writing practices into the summer with practical ways of ensuring writing time is protected and sustainable. 

Participation will be capped at 24 faculty (including TASHn researchers) to focus on creating a supportive space to write together and to emphasize comradery, confidentiality, and accountability among peers.  

Who Should Apply and Eligibility:

Participants must hold a continuing faculty appointment at the University of Toronto. Participation will be capped at 24 faculty (including TASHn researchers) to focus on creating a supportive space to write together and to emphasize comradery, confidentiality, and accountability among peers.

Expectations and Commitments:

Faculty participants will spend two hours weekly in synchronous sessions with the entire group. Participants should expect to spend an additional 3-5 hours per week working on their articles and completing program readings and activities. All accepted participants will receive a hard copy of the book Writing Your Journal Article in Twelve Weeks (2019) to be picked up in person at CRIS during the first session of the program on January 8, 2027. Additional readings will be available on SharePoint as .pdfs or available online via University of Toronto library collections.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the Faculty Writing Accelerator: Journal Articles participants will have: 

  1.  A finished draft of a journal article ready for submission to a scholarly peer-reviewed journal 
  2. An adaptable and reproducible scholarly writing practice that works with ebbs and flows of faculty service and teaching requirements  
  3. An article abstract and title optimized for keyword searches and discoverability to increase citation impact

Additionally, participants will have longitudinal outcomes that include:

  1. An established peer-to-peer, cross disciplinary networks at UofT
  2. An increased awareness of the ‘hidden curriculum’ of for getting articles accepted in scholarly journals

Program Goals:

  • Establish regular writing habits
  • Build and sustain a scholarly writing practice that is adaptable  
  • Hone and clarify arguments and claims to increase acceptance rates
  • Gain supportive group accountability to counteract the isolation of scholarly writing
  • Learn how to increase scholarship discoverability with keywords and bibliometrics  
  • Discover scholarly publishing and supports available at UofT Libraries (e.g., OA; copyright; author rights negotiation)
