How to Write – and Publish an Op-ed! A Workshop for Researchers

The Global Excellence is organizing a series of workshops to support Canada’s researchers in the efforts to share knowledge, research and science. We are pleased to invite you to the first in the series which will provide insight on how to communicate your research and work through op-eds.

About the program:
This program is designed for communicators at all levels. Participants are invited to attend a session that include group discussion, questions, hands-on work and detailed feedback.

The session topics include:
– Drawing on expertise and research;
– Honing prose and logic;
– Writing for a general audience;
– Organizing and outlining; and
– Tips for submitting op-eds to publications.

About the Instructor:

Kate Heartfield was a columnist and editor for the Ottawa Citizen, the daily newspaper in Canada’s capital, for more than 11 years. She was on the masthead as the editorial pages editor when she left the business in 2015; she was shortlisted for a National Newspaper Award for editorial writing that same year. Kate has been a mentor/editor for The OpEd Project and Informed Opinions for several years.

Kate will explain how to craft a compelling and persuasive op-ed, and how to place it in the right publication.
