Lightning Lunch: Programming Relationships

Session Description

January 14, 2020 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Join us for 7 minute lightning talks from different disciplinary perspectives designed to provoke discussion.

Jessamyn Schertz (Linguistics) will discuss how our perception of sounds is shaped by social expectations. Using behavioural experiments, she “maps” listeners’ sound categories in a multi-dimensional acoustic space, then tests how the boundaries of these maps shift when listeners are confronted with different talkers.

Chris M. Smith (Sociology) will demonstrate network package in R that support her social network analysis to identify “key players” in historical crime data. Her talk will focus on the research frustrations when network algorithms and history are incompatible.
