Long-Term care homes during the pandemic: Lessons learned and rethinking the future – Feb. 17, 2022

This webinar will explore findings from a community-based research study which explored the physical design and environment of nine Ontario Long Term Care homes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Presenters will share design studies the team has been developing to respond to findings as well as best practice principles from human factors, ergonomics and accessible design. The presentation will conclude with the importance of design in Long Term Care from the perspective of education, policy, and leadership.

Presenters Bio:
Chantal Trudel is the inaugural Director of Carleton University’s Centre for Community Engagement. She is an Associate Professor in the School of Industrial Design, member of the Human Computer Interaction program and cross-appointed to The School of Information Technology in the Faculty of Engineering and Design. She is an industrial designer (BID, Carleton University), a human factors professional (MSc, University of Nottingham) with an Honours BA in Philosophy (University of Ottawa). Chantal is a faculty member with the READi program at Carleton funded by NSERC CREATE, which stands for ‘Research and Education in Accessibility, Design, and Innovation’. She is also currently developing the Abilities Living Laboratory (or ALL) at Carleton, a CFI funded collaborative and community-facing laboratory space focused on supporting personal mobility, habilitation, rehabilitation, as well as accessibility and inclusion in public life. Chantal’s research and educational approach is grounded in salutogenic design to support health and wellness. Prior to working at Carleton University, she worked as a product designer followed by more than 10 years of experience in healthcare planning and design. Throughout her career, Chantal has been a strong proponent of participatory design, acting as a facilitator to engage community stakeholders in the design and development of their projects.

Soo Wong was a MPP from 2011 to 2018. She is currently seeking election as the Liberal candidate for Scarborough—Agincourt. Soo was the former Executive Director for a Non-For-Profit long-term care home in the Greater Toronto Area. Soo has an extensive background in education and was a former TDSB Trustee and a Nursing Professor. She is also the founder of Reading Circle, a program that promotes children’s literacy in the community.
