In Conversation With…Visiting Topics in EDI in Research & Innovation is a series of discussions with experts at University of Toronto on how to embed best practices and strategic EDI approaches within the research and innovation ecosystem. Each session will be hosted by Dr. Nicole Kaniki, the inaugural Director of EDI in Research and Innovation, and she will be joined by guests from across the tri-campus for these conversations.

Session 5: Balancing Power Relationships in Community Based Partnerships with Dr. Notisha Massaquoi

Tri-council and federal funding for community-based research has seen a significant increase in the past few years as EDI considerations and social impact of research practices have become a priority. Research ethics boards have ensured the protection of the research participant through practices of consent and ethical engagement practices but balancing the power dynamics between researcher and participant especially when the community represents a marginalized population can still lead to exploitative practices. In this session Dr. Kaniki and Dr. Massaquoi discuss best practices for researchers to consider in navigating power relationships in community-based research with marginalized and minority groups.
