Research on Teaching: Survey Design, Mar. 11, 2020

Session Description

March 11, 2020 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm EDT

Research on Teaching (SoTL): Survey Design

This session, hosted by the Centre for Teaching Support and Innovation (CTSI),  provides an introductory overview of the practical design and use of surveys, focusing on Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) work. We will begin with a discussion on the strengths (and weaknesses) of using surveys relative to other methods to answer SoTL related questions for research and/or evaluation. In particular, we will discuss what surveys can measure (e.g., self-reports of attitudes, behaviours, beliefs), the types of instruments which exist including validated instruments/scales, and what research questions survey results can reasonably help answer. Following this, participants will be guided through an overview of best practices in design, analysis, and interpretation of survey questionnaires and items. Finally, this workshop will also provide practical guidance for conducting surveys in SoTL settings (e.g., using U of T supported tools, gathering consent, ensuring high response rates).
