Storytelling with Data (PowerBI)

Session Description

February 28 2025 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Please, check out other Fun Data Friday events.

  • What: Learn the basics of using PowerBI, Microsoft’s Business Intelligence software. Using a fictional business’ reports and data, we will develop interactive visualizations and dashboards that are sure to impress your boss or future funders.
  • Why: Create captivating interactive digital reports and dashboards is a sure way to improve communication about the data you are working with, regardless of profession or area of interest. Communication is one skill everyone can continue to grow professionally. Research indicates around 65% of individuals are visual learners, so creating data visualizations can improve your messaging to your audience.
  • Software: Microsoft Power BI is a premier data visualization and reporting platform that is used by businesses and professionals every day. University of Toronto students all have access to PowerBI through their Microsoft Office 365 accounts.
  • Who: This workshop is designed for individuals interested in making data driven decisions and improving their data insight and communication skills. Participants from any discipline: Human Geography, Social Sciences, or Sciences are encouraged to participate. An understanding of spreadsheets and datatypes would be helpful for this workshop.
  • How: This is a 2 hour in-person workshop, consisting of a short lecture and then a series of demonstrations, which you can follow along with or just watch, interspersed with activities we will complete together and discuss. There are no breaks.
  • Where: This workshop will be held in The BRIDGE Data Lab (IC 108)
  • When: Friday, February 28, 3-5:00pm.
