"Fictions of Consent: Slavery, Servitude, and Free Service in Early Modern England"

In Fictions of Consent:Slavery, Servitude, and Free Service in Early Modern England, Professor Urvashi Chakravarty explores the ideologies of slavery inearly modern England prior to the development of an organized slave trade. In her book, Professor Chakravarty reveals that that slavery was an English phenomenon.  She traces the conceptual framework for racialized slavery from the impactof bloodlines on family, households, and society at large.   

The Research Excellence Lecture Series will be held the first Wednesday of the month 10:00am to 11:00pm from October 2021 to April 2022. Each Research Excellence Lecture will feature a different UTSC Faculty member discussing their research and accomplishments.
