Brainwriting is a collaborative technique used for effective and rapid idea generation with groups. It is an engaging process where each individual shares ideas and group members then build upon these existing ideas through an iterative process. This technique allows participants to simultaneously build upon ideas and generate “big ideas”.

Session Approach

Introduce the Brainwriting technique to participants utilizing the template

Describe the process of generating ideas, along with building upon existing ideas. It may be beneficial to identify a couple initial ideas, prior to the session, to create a focused exercise that adheres to the session objectives.

Instruct each participant to develop three key ideas relevant to the proposed topic.

After an allocated time (e.g., 5 minutes), invite each participant to pass the sheet of paper with the three ideas to another individual in the room.

Group members are then encouraged to identify three more relevant and innovative ideas that build and connect to existing ideas. Repeat as necessary (e.g., 3-5 rounds).

Ensure the paper is passed to each individual and all ideas are recorded.

The final result of this exercise will showcase a web of many interconnected ideas.

Tips

Facilitators can adapt this exercise for virtual environments. Participants can use the video conferencing chat function or break-out rooms to engage in this idea generation process.
