This guide includes a curated list of resources for initiating or building a community research partnership. This guide brings together popular guidelines and toolkits for community partnered research from the planning stages through to dissemination and action. This guide also features funding and training opportunities as well as institutional memberships to support community partnered research at University of Toronto.

Guidelines and Toolkits

The tools, templates and resources in this toolkit were compiled and developed by the CBR team at Access Alliance based on half a decade of implementing CBR projects. These tools and resources cover a wide range of topics from planning for community partnered research through to resources to support creating policy change.

This toolkit addresses action plans that focus on prevention, education, advocacy and research programs, with a focus public health and human services.

The toolbox presents research concepts, methods, and tools through topical guides and toolkits such as community research, participatory asset mapping, and a short guide to community-based participatory research. 

This toolkit aims to help researchers and partners plan and implement a partnership, from preparing an application for partnership funding to knowledge mobilization activities.

Chapter 9 of the TCPS2 includes guidance for research involving the First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples of Canada.

This guidebook includes a step-by-step guide to establishing and managing a Priority Setting Partnership and the principles behind it.

This initiative provides a collection of resources around topics that are important to patient and public involvement. From starting your journey in involvement to tackling issues like payments, inclusivity and impact.

CCP supports community placements, workshops and training, leadership opportunities, mentorship and other support to learn in community while development knowledge and skills.

The Connected Communities Resource Library compiled by the Partnership Brokers Association is a dynamic platform of resources, tools and materials to support users to build strong and inclusive communities

This organization provides resources and practices for individuals working as partnership brokers. Brokers serve the partners by helping them to share their partnership.

Tamarack is uniquely positioned to act as a bridge between theory and practice, teaching and coaching organizations, municipalities and groups to engage their communities meaningfully. The provide leadership in applying community engagement to systems-thinking in order to work collaboratively for community-wide change

Funding and Training Opportunities

The Connaught programs are open to emerging and established University of Toronto researchers. The following programs support partnerships. Details of each fund are available through the Connaught Fund website:

  • Major Research Challenge for Black Researchers

The Division of the Vice-President Research and Innovation curates a database of funding opportunities most commonly accessed by our research community.

The Centre for Research & Innovation Support (CRIS) hosts a broad range of workshops to support partnership and engagement.

U of T also maintains several institutional memberships and shared resources to assist divisions and researchers with advocacy, outreach, and community building, of particular relevance is Community-Based Research Canada, a non-profit member organization to which U of T belongs.
