The SCAMPER acronym represents seven methods to find solutions to complex problems: Substitute, Combine, Adapt, Modify, Put to Another Use, Eliminate, and Reverse. The group engages in a series of questions to probe critical thinking and innovative ideas.

Session Approach

  • Introduce the SCAMPER technique to participants utilizing the template. Describe each of the concepts, along with the suggested questions. It may be beneficial to adapt these questions, prior to the session, to create a focused exercise that adheres to the session objectives.
  • It may not be feasible, given time constraints or alternate priorities, to review all concepts in SCAMPER. Therefore, divide the participants into pairs or small groups and have them work on two of the SCAMPER approaches (e.g., Pair 1 = S & C, Pair 2 = A & M). For virtual environments, use the breakout room function on video conferencing software.
  • Bring the full group back together to share their ideas. Remind the group that every idea is welcome and to avoid judgment. All ideas should be collected and captured through notes or virtual transcription software.
