Additions to University of Toronto Library Collections

The library has acquired the following resources:
New additions to Africa Commons:
Hilary Ng’weno Archive collection contains digitized pages from Ng’weno’s media company and publications, including The Weekly Review (1975-1999) and The Nairobi Times (1977-1983). Ng’weno was an African investigative journalist active in the 70s and 80s and known for his critical analysis and political criticism. The collection also includes Ng’weno’s children’s magazine, Rainbow (1976-1995) and the Kenyan Heritage Series which is a collection of 50 short videos produced by Ng’weno. Of interest to scholars in media studies, political science, African studies and history, and early childhood education.
Black South African Magazines collection includes over 50,000 pages of historically rare magazines written by and for Black African audiences. Media genres in the magazine include fiction, reviews, investigative journalism, photograph, biographies, fashion, lifestyle, advertisements, and more. Of interest to scholars in media studies, African studies and history, sociology, cultural studies, fashion studies, art history, political science, photography, and geography.
Africa and the New Imperialism: European Borders on the African Continent, 1870-1914 collection documents the period of rapid colonial expansion across Africa during the later 19th and early 20th century. The collection covers themes of imperialism, religion and missionaries, technology and infrastructure, and diplomacy. Records include correspondence, diaries and journals, drawings, financial documents, government documents and reports, books, photographs, and ephemera. Of interest to scholars in African studies and history, colonial history, religion, sociology, political science, media studies, and geography.
